The RH2INE-interview: 'CANOPY' - Rewarding the contribution to cleaner air 

At a recent RH2INE meeting in Brussels, Johan Gille (program manager inland shipping from the Port of Rotterdam) presented an innovative concept called ‘CANOPY’. Gille and his colleague Wouter Vuijk developed the concept, which stands for ‘Compensation for Avoided NOx and Particulate Matter’. The idea aims to make zero-emission shipping more commercially attractive by capturing the societal and environmental value of reduced air pollution.

The Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP), unveiled by the European Commission, targets the decarbonisation of aviation and maritime transport by mobilising at least €2.9 billion by end-2027 through instruments like InvestEU (€2 billion for alternative fuels), €300 million via the European Hydrogen Bank for hydrogen-based Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and Sustainable Maritime Fuels (SMF), plus additional support via the Innovation Fund and Horizon Europe. The plan also seeks to de-risk investment by creating mechanisms connecting producers and buyers, and aims to strengthen Europe's energy security, industrial competitiveness and path to climate neutrality by 2050. This plan might boost investment decisions on clean hydrogen projects!

The energy transition in inland shipping is accelerating, and hydrogen is at the heart of it. We are happy to invite you to this year’s RH2INE Conference 'Hydrogen for Inland Shipping: Status, Challenges and Opportunities in the Rhine Corridor'. It will bring together policymakers, frontrunners, and industry leaders to share insights and shape the next steps for hydrogen along the Rhine Corridor.

We are especially pleased to welcome the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands, Robert Tieman, the State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia Paul Höller and Minister of Mobility, Public Works, Ports and Sport, Flanders, Annick De Ridder. Their presence emphasizes the strong political support for cross-border cooperation, alongside the pioneering companies already taking action.

Under the motto “From Ambition to Action”, the conference will highlight the current status of the RH2INE project, explore challenges and opportunities, and showcase concrete progress being made. In addition, participants will enjoy interactive sessions, keynotes from early adopters, and networking moments – including a lunch on board the Zilvermeeuw.
